In that study, fecal consistency improved in many dogs and average cyst shedding dropped after treatment, but complete elimination was uncommon. Only 8 of 23 dogs reached the study’s definition of therapeutic success, meaning at least a 90% reduction in cyst shedding, and only 4 of 23 dogs had complete elimination of G. duodenalis. The authors concluded that fenbendazole may improve fecal consistency but had limited therapeutic efficacy against giardiosis in that dog population.
This is an important difference from the older study. The newer study took place in real home conditions, with dogs living in a shared campus environment where reinfection, repeated exposure, variable cyst shedding, and environmental contamination were all relevant. By 8 to 10 days after treatment, cyst shedding was still measurable in many dogs, which the authors suggested could reflect reinfection, multiplication of remaining organisms, or treatment failure in some cases.
Why Two Studies Can Point In Different Directions
The two studies do not automatically cancel each other out. They show why Giardia treatment is not always simple. The 1994 study found strong results in a small controlled group of dogs, with no cysts detected after fenbendazole treatment. The 2022 study found that, in home conditions, stool quality often improved but cyst elimination was much less consistent.
