What is dog regurgitation?

Regurgitation is involuntary in your dog. This is different than with vomiting. With vomiting, you’ll most likely know it’s coming because you’ll hear the incomparable retching and dry-heaving that occurs right before your dog yaks. (They should make an alarm clock with that sound.)

With regurgitation? There’s little warning that your dog is about to lose everything they just ate. He’ll just all of a sudden bring it all back up with little fanfare or issue. There’s no muscle contraction or struggle, even. This is because what’s being regurgitated (regurgitus) comes from your dog’s esophagus or pharynx. This is different from when your dog vomits because that throw-up comes from their stomach or intestines.

Common causes of regurgitation in dogs

Regurgitation is different from vomiting. You can usually see your dog’s undigested food when it’s regurgitated.
