Dog Regurgitation

Bernie’s Perfect Poop helps battle regurgitation in dogs

Sometimes your dog may appear to throw up, or vomit, but they’ll actually be suffering from regurgitation. Regurgitation is when food or other contents of the mouth are expelled from the mouth or the esophagus only. How can Bernie’s Perfect Poop help regurgitation in dogs? • Good dog gut health is important for your dog’s overall wellness. We feed our dogs nutritious food to fuel them, but if they’re regurgitating what we feed, they’re not getting vital nutrition. Bernie’s helps your dog digest his food better, making more nutrients absorbed. This also helps reduce contents from being regurgitated.
  • Some foods are hard for dogs to digest. Quality fiber helps your dog digest his food and move it through the digestive tract more smoothly—starting with the esophagus. The perfect combination of Miscanthus grass, pumpkin and flaxseed in Bernie’s gives your dog the fiber they move their food through the digestive tract properly to avoid any regurgitation that may be associated with Gastric Reflux.
  • Bernie’s Perfect Poop also combines prebiotics and probiotics to balance your dog’s gut microbiome. If your dog’s gut is balanced, there’s less chance for gastric reflux and regurgitation to occur. The prebiotics and probiotics in Bernie’s encourage optimal dog gut health to keep your digestive system working smoothly.
  • Every cell of your dog’s body needs nutrients. The combination of enzymes in Bernie’s breaks your dog’s food down better from the start. That means the food has a better chance of being absorbed appropriately and of making it down the esophageal tract to be digested.
  • Bernie’s Perfect Poop is a 4-in-1 combination of fiber, prebiotics, probiotics, and enzymes. Good dog gut health is the key to a happier, healthier life for your dog. Often, regurgitation occurs because your dog’s digestive tract could benefit from a better gut microbiome. Bernie’s gives your dog better dog gut health, and less regurgitation.

What is dog regurgitation?

Regurgitation is involuntary in your dog. This is different than with vomiting. With vomiting, you’ll most likely know it’s coming because you’ll hear the incomparable retching and dry-heaving that occurs right before your dog yaks. (They should make an alarm clock with that sound.)

With regurgitation? There’s little warning that your dog is about to lose everything they just ate. He’ll just all of a sudden bring it all back up with little fanfare or issue. There’s no muscle contraction or struggle, even. This is because what’s being regurgitated (regurgitus) comes from your dog’s esophagus or pharynx. This is different from when your dog vomits because that throw-up comes from their stomach or intestines.

  • Coughing/clearing throat
  • Bad breath/halitosis
  • Passage of mucus or liquid stool (when a blockage is present)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Hungrily eating
  • Weight loss
  • Runny nose

Common causes of regurgitation in dogs

Sometimes, your dog’s regurgitation is as simple as them eating so quickly that their esophagus can’t handle the amount of food going down and they involuntarily bring it back up. Often, it can be the result of excess (or too little) stomach acid your dog produces that pushes the food back toward your dog’s mouth and away from the stomach. Other causes include:

Possible causes of regurgitation Can Perfect Poop Help?
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Yes
Excess acid reflux Yes
Indigestion Yes
Throat problems (cancer, muscle disease)
Congenital esophageal problems (narrow esophagus, hiatal hernia, tumors)

Regurgitation is different from vomiting. You can usually see your dog’s undigested food when it’s regurgitated. Sometimes if a dog regurgitates, they may accidentally inhale the regurgitus back into their lungs and aspirate. If you find your dog is regurgitating regularly, check with your veterinarian to be sure there isn’t something bigger at play. Your dog needs the nutrition from their food!

More information about constipation in dogs

Good dog gut health is pivotal to overall health in your dog. If your dog’s gut is healthy, the odds of them suffering from acid reflux or GERD are smaller. Additionally, they’ll be able to digest food better with balanced guts. Dogs who have balanced guts also are less at risk for diseases or illnesses that may cause later problems.

Fiber may help with regurgitation

Fiber is helpful in battling regurgitation because it aids your dog’s digestive system and keeps everything moving properly through the system. When your dog has the right fiber intake, their balanced microbiomes are capable of producing the right amount of digestive juices to propel food through the digestive system. Not only does the right combination of insoluble and soluble fiber help prevent diarrhea, constipation and acid production imbalance, but it also keeps your dog’s gut ready to keep food moving appropriately down their esophagus.

Prebiotics and probiotics may help with regurgitation

Prebiotics and probiotics are key supplements to helping your dog’s gut health be at its best. Prebiotics and probiotics balance out your dog’s digestive tract bacteria and microbiome and this keeps food moving appropriately from one end to the other. The prebiotic in Bernie’s is Inulin, which acts as a fertilizer to feed the good bacteria in your dog’s lower digestive tract. When the good bacteria in your dog’s digestive tract gets the right nutrition, they thrive and keep your dog’s gut healthy and balanced. This reduces stomach acid imbalance.

Probiotics are the good bacteria in your dog’s gut. Adding that good bacteria through supplementation helps achieve good dog gut health by pushing harmful bacteria out. When the good bacteria get the proper nutrition, they thrive. When they thrive, the gut becomes more balanced and functions properly. When we add good bacteria with Bernie’s, we help achieve good dog gut health and this helps prevent regurgitation by reducing many GERD symptoms.

Enzymes may help with regurgitation

Enzymes in Bernie’s Perfect Poop will help your dog’s digestive tract break food down better. Harmful bacteria thrive on undigested carbohydrates and can cause an overgrowth of bacteria that reduces the necessary stomach acid your dog needs. The enzymes in Bernie’s begin working with your dog’s saliva in their mouth to ensure the breakdown of nutrients, and this can help balance the stomach acid in your dog’s digestive system. Your dog’s digestive system is detailed and involves several organs. The healthier that system, the better your dog’s digestion will be. This means less regurgitation too.
